"Single mother Elodie’s life has become a fairy tale. She’s met Bren, equal parts Golden-retriever-devoted and sinfully handsome. He’s whisked her and her autistic son, Jude, to the crumbling family house he’s renovating...

Until Jude claims he can hear voices in the walls."

This is my fourth novel from CG Drews. And for an author that I do not hear mentioned a lot, Drews continues to needle me with her stories in a way that I did not anticipate.

This book is no different.

Readers will likely be lead into this book with the knowledge that this is a haunted house blended with domestic suspense. But be warned – you will be gut-punched with characters that will tear at your emotions and a plot that pulls you along blindly.

Many reviewers are warning this is not a book for readers who dislike unfavourable characters. But for those like me — who love a morally-uncertain main character; someone who keeps you guessing about motives or whether there should be a glimmer of sympathy — this is a must-read.

Elodie is a mother figure that the world would be quick to judge.

A parent who appears to fumble along, making decisions others may scold or look down on. She has a son that does not fit a typical mold, a family that is not traditional and is now raising her child in a questionable environment. And as the story progresses it raises the questions - should Elodie be judged? Or is there something else that is the real cause for concern?

Everything is wrapped up in an atmosphere perfect for readers who love unsettling suspense. Between a house that probably should not be inhabited to an inner-dialogue that makes your gut drop just a little, I felt pulled along waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop.

For audiobook readers, I thought this was a decent pick. Saskia Maarleveld did a great job embodying a character that felt both somewhat familiar but also, at times, unsettlingly out of reach. And the suspense was well iterated throughout.

Recommended for readers of psychological suspense and those who are waiting for a time to try this author for the first time. I rate this book 4.25 out of 5.
